Sugary Drinks Linked to Higher Risk of Liver Disease, Cancer

Consuming one or more sugar-sweetened beverages daily is linked to a higher risk of developing liver cancer and chronic liver disease, according to some new research. The risk was increased 85% for liver cancer and 68% for chronic liver disease mortality.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an association between sugar sweetened beverage intake and chronic liver disease mortality,” said Longgang Zhao, PhD, first study author. “Our findings, if confirmed, may pave the way to a public health strategy to reduce risk of liver disease…”

The study involved nearly 99,000 postmenopausal women and had an average followup period of over 20 years. It was observational only, meaning more research is needed to determine if the association found between sugary drinks and liver cancer/disease has a cause and effect nature.

Still, with chronic liver disease being a major cause of death and poor health worldwide, these new findings offer a caution against drinking too many sugar-sweetened beverages– something about 65% of adults in the U.S. do daily.

A “Mediterranean Lifestyle”— Not Just Diet— May Be Key to Longevity

Adhering to a Mediterranean “lifestyle” can reduce the risk of death from cancer and any cause, a recent study has confirmed. But surprisingly, dietary changes were not the biggest factor when it came to longevity benefits.

The study analyzed the habits of over 110,000 adults between the ages of 40-75. Adherence to a Mediterranean lifestyle (MEDLIFE) was scored based on three categories: food consumption (eating Mediterranean diet foods like whole grains), dietary habits (limiting salt, sugar, alcohol, etc.), and “physical activity, rest, and social habits and conviviality”.

The highest MEDLIFE scores– combining all three categories– corresponded to a 29% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 28% lower risk of cancer mortality compared to those with lower MEDLIFE scores.

However, those who scored highest in the third category, which emphasizes habits like taking regular naps, exercising, and spending time with friends, were independently the most likely to experience a lower mortality risk. They also had a reduced risk of death from heart disease, which was not noted in the other two categories.

The World’s Sharpest Kitchen Knives

Cooking from scratch is key to healthy eating, but you need the right knife to keep food prep from becoming a frustrating chore.

If you’ve ever tried to chop vegetables with a blunt knife, you know the frustration for yourself firsthand. What should take minutes (or seconds) ends up being a drawn-out process that you use brute force to get through. This common struggle is exactly why Chef’s Foundry developed their professional grade P600 Ceramic Knives. These easy-to-handle knives cut through all types of food and produce like butter and are made from zirconium ceramic, which is 10x harder and sharper than steel. They also keep their edge for longer than any other blade AND are more affordable than regular steel knives.

See for yourself how the P600 knives slice right through veggies (and a watermelon) here.

7 Toxic Ingredients in Common Soaps & Facial Cleansers

Soap is meant to cleanse your skin but many of the most common options are flawed. Some strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it irritated, while others disturb the natural pH of skin. Even worse, many cleansers contain toxic ingredients. Parabens, for example, are a common preservative that disrupt hormones. Sulfates and fragrance can lead to skin sensitivity and irritation, while cocamidopropyl betaine was once named the “Allergen of the Year.” Also, beware of preservatives that release formaldehyde, a carcinogen. Breastfeeding Could Boost the Mother’s Heart Health

Breastfeeding has long been associated with benefits for the baby, including better immune function and a lower risk of diseases like asthma, obesity, and type 2 diabetes down the road. Some new research has now confirmed that breastfeeding (for at least 6 months) can also benefit the mother, specifically by lowering certain measures of heart health like blood pressure, BMI, and triglycerides. A Diet High in Fatty Fish May Reduce Migraines

A recent study has found that consuming more fatty fish and less vegetable oil could reduce “total headache hours per day” by 30-40% for migraine sufferers. Researchers theorize that these findings could be due to the omega 3 fatty acids found in the fish, which have anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, many commonly used vegetable oils (corn, soybean, etc.) are high in omega 6 and are often over-consumed. (More)

Is Snacking Bad for Your Health?

Snacking is undoubtedly popular, but is it a bad habit you need to get rid of? Not necessarily. Some recent research shows that “quality” snacks– foods that contain significant amounts of nutrients– can actually be healthy. However, highly processed snacks are (not surprisingly) bad for your health, and late-evening snacking is associated with unfavorable blood sugar and lipid levels. Snack frequency didn’t appear to have an effect one way or the other. (More)

15 Health Benefits of Grounding, An Ancient Technique

Grounding, also called earthing, is an ancient technique that involves contacting the earth (grass, dirt, sand, etc.) with your bare skin. Though not yet studied intensively, emerging research suggests that grounding can improve immune system function, blood flow, and wound healing. It has also shown potential for reducing pain and inflammation and improving sleep quality. Plus, it may help lower stress, improve your mood, and even decrease fatigue. (More)

Remodeling is a process during which your bones “refresh” themselves via cells that break them down and build them back up. As a result of this process, most of an adult skeleton is replaced about every 10 years.
